After India attained Independence in 1947, the first Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru, requested the Bharat Sevashram Sangha to send cultural missions to parts of the world where Indians had settled.

On the 28th December 1950, one such mission arrived on the shores of Trinidad and Tobago. The head of this mission was Swami Advaitanandaji Maharaj and it included Swami Purnanandaji Maharaj, Bramchari Rajkrishna and Bramchari Mritunjoy. The team was accommodated at the home of Mr. Badase Sagan Maharaj (founder of the Maha Sabha – the premier Hindu Organization in Trinidad and Tobago).

The mission travelled the far reaches of Trinidad and Tobago to revive Hinduism using the medium of the Vedic Sandhya, Havan and the powerful Guru Arti. The Indian settlers here were mainly indentured laborers who arrived 105 years prior to work on the sugar cane estates.

While the other members of the mission went to Guyana, Swami Purnananda settled in Felicity at the request of the villagers. He founded the Dorman Nursery School (still fully functioning) in September 1954.
